Women's Scottish Cup Semi-Final
Glasgow City v Celtic
Sunday, 23 April, kick off 12:30pm
Hampden Park

Glasgow City and Celtic played out an entertaining seven-goal thriller at Petershill Park in SWPL1 on Sunday, and they will face off again at Hampden Park on this weekend.

The match will mark the second Women's Scottish Cup Semi-Final to have taken place at the National Stadium, after Rangers take on Motherwell on Saturday.

The Women's Scottish Cup was revamped for this season, with the showpiece matches taking place at the National Stadium, while a brand-new trophy was revealed this week.

Cup Form

The Women’s Scottish Cup’s most successful side with nine victories to date arrive at Hampden with the aim of making a record-extending 15th Scottish Cup Final appearance at the expense of their Glasgow rivals.

City’s 4-3 victory over Hibernian in an epic 2019 final encounter at Tynecastle was their first Scottish Cup triumph since 2015 and they come into today’s encounter with the knowledge that it was Celtic that defeated them in the final of both the SWPL Cup and Scottish Cup last season.

Glasgow City have endured a smooth path to the Semi-Finals and have yet to concede a goal.

After a 4-0 win over Hamilton Academical, they saw off Aberdeen 5-0 before beating Kilmarnock 3-0 in the Quarter-Final.

Cup holders Celtic will come into Sunday's match looking to take another step towards retaining the trophy they won for the first time last season as they defeated Glasgow City 3-2 after extra-time last May.

That final would be only Celtic’s second appearance in the end of season showpiece, their first coming back in 2008 where they would lose 3-1 after extra-time to Hibernian at McDiarmid Park with current Celtic midfielder Natalie Ross in the Edinburgh side’s starting eleven.

In this season's competition, Celtic enjoyed routine wins over lower league sides Falkirk and Boroughmuir Thistle.

They were given a brief scare by Hearts in the Semi-final, however, and they found themselves a goal down at half-time before eventually running out 5-1 winners after a superb second half performance.

Pre-match thoughts

Scotland international Hayley Lauder is one of the few City players to have experienced playing at Hampden Park. The experienced midfielder has urged her team-mates to enjoy the experience.

She said: "I'm looking forward to it. I've played there a couple of times (including when Scotland defeated Jamaica 3-2 in 2019) and to play at your National Stadium is something that you always want to do. After watching the Scotland Women's National Team play there a couple of times recently I think it'll be really special for all the teams to go and do it.

"When you think of the prestige of the national stadium and how not many players will get to play there then it's a day that everyone can enjoy and hopefully that family and friends can be part of as well.

"I think when you look at that side of it as a pretty cool thing. Obviously we don’t know how many fans will be there but it will be as special for them as it will be for us I’m sure."

Celtic captain Kelly Clark, meanwhile, reflected on last year's triumph.

She said: "It was just amazing. I had my family in the crowd and the crowd as a whole had been pretty amazing throughout, when Izzy Atkinson's extra-time goal went in I can't explain the feeling and then it was the same again getting to lift the trophy, it was massive for me.

"The noise, the singing afterwards just kind of hit home what you've done for such a big club. Last year was my first experience of lifting any trophies with Celtic and once you've done it once you crave that exact same feeling again because nothing compares to it.

"Last year was the first time we won a cup, we won the League Cup before Christmas and then the Scottish Cup but if you were to ask me of the two which one was my favourite it would have to be the Scottish Cup just because of the way that the game went.

"Going down to ten players before half-time, having to dig in and to score a winner in extra time all made it so much more special."
